Tips for Moving as a Family

Moving home is said to be one of the most stressful things you can do in your life, and we don't doubt the truth of that for one minute! One thing we do know, though, is that it becomes a whole lot more difficult and stressful when you're moving a whole family. If you're planning a big move this year with all your family, then it's best to make sure you're well prepared, and this is what we're talking about today.

Moving home is said to be one of the most stressful things you can do in your life, and we don’t doubt the truth of that for one minute! One thing we do know, though, is that it becomes a whole lot more difficult and stressful when you’re moving a whole family. If you’re planning a big move this year with all your family, then it’s best to make sure you’re well prepared, and this is what we’re talking about today.

Tips for moving as a family

  1. Start with a clear out
Starting with a clear out means you have less stuff to pack up and take with you when it comes to actually moving. Get into everything, throw out all your rubbish, and sort through any of your belongings (including your family’s) that just aren’t getting used any more. These can then be sorted into a throw away pile, a donate pile, and a sell pile. This will make your packing easier, and you’ll have less to move and unpack when you arrive!
  2. Go room by room
Of course, there are going to be things in each room that you can’t pack up because you’re using them, but go room by room and pack up the things that you can go without for a little while. Leaving out a few sets of clothes and the stuff you need to cook, and getting everything else ready to go!
  3. Make sure the whole family are prepared… and get them all involved!
One of the toughest things about moving with the whole family is that there’s just so much stuff to sort out. The best way to combat that is by making sure that the whole family are prepared for the move, and they’re all mucking in to help you out when you’re packing. Make a game out of it for your children if at all possible – they’re much more inclined to get stuck in when you’re making things fun!
  4. Give yourself plenty of time
Once you’ve had your offer confirmed on a property, or you’ve made firm rental plans, start getting yourself sorted out straight away. This way, you should have a couple of weeks to get yourself packed and prepared for the move, hopefully keeping things a little more relaxed and reducing the stress just slightly.
  5. Hire help!

Obviously this will only apply if you can afford it, but if you can afford to hire people to help you pack the van, move the stuff and then get your boxes into the correct room in your new home, then definitely do so. This will remove some of the pressure from you and your family, and help you get unpacked and organised a little bit quicker!
