Hiring reliable contractors, the tips

  1. Recommendations
Taking recommendations from friends and family is the most common way to hire reliable contractors, and indeed word of mouth is how many smaller companies generate their business.
  2. Phone around
Sometimes speaking to the contractors you’rethinking of hiring will give you the best idea of whether or not they’re right for you. It’ll also give you the opportunity to ask if they take on projects of the size you require, ask for an estimate of how long the project will take, and get an estimate of costs, too.
  3. Arrange a meeting
Once you’ve spoken to a few contractors on the phone, arrange a meeting with a few of them in person to reiterate the questions you’ve asked, give them a bit more detail about the project and generally take the opportunity to learn more. This will also give you the opportunity to see how they are as a person and evaluate their general demeanour.
  4. Check out their back catalogue
Any contractor worth their salt will provide details of previous clients; use this to your advantage. Give them a call and ask how the project went and see whether they’re happy with the finished result. This is especially beneficial if some of these projects are similar to what you’re looking to have done.
  5. Make plans
Now you’re at this stage, you should have around two or three contractors that you’re thinking of working with, and it’s time to get down to it and make some plans. Speak with everyone you’re considering working with to get a quote for the work, including a full break down of costs.
  6. Make your decision
Once you’ve received a quote from your potential contractors and have a good idea of their work and work ethic, it’s time to make a decision as to who you’d like working with you on your project. When you’ve decided, double check that they’re still available for the job, and then politely inform everyone else you were considering that you’ve chosen your contractor for the job.
  7. Iron everything out
Now is the time to iron everything out (any lingering budgeting issues, timeline constraints and so on) and get it all down on paper. Be sure to write up a contract and have your contractor sign it with a witness present in case of any legal problems later down the line.
  8. Get started
Now you’re ready to get started! You’ve chosen a great contractor, and no doubt your finished project will be all you hoped it would.
