The Perfect Home: Self Sufficient
Most of us know that, if we continue the way we're doing, our fossil fuels are going to run out sooner than originally expected and renewable energy sources just aren't at the point where they can sustain the energy requirements of the planet. With that in mind, many of us are trying to move towards being more eco-friendly, with some even building self sufficient houses. Those are the focus of our perfect home ideal today.

The Perfect Home: Self Sufficient
The idea of this home is to be self sufficient, eco-friendly and able to produce all its own energy in the long run. It’s important to consider, however, whether the property is eco-friendly in building, and in the materials that are used. Some of the aspects of this perfect home that I would like to have are:
- that the property was built with the planet in mind. The use of unnecessary energy reduced, and chemicals and the like being exposed to the environment kept to a minimum.
- the property being built from renewable materials; for the most part, I’d like the property to be wooden. Although, understandably, that’s not always possible – however this is the “perfect” home, so I’m writing for ideals!
- the ability to produce its own energy, with a view to only using energy created by the house itself. Solar panels are the most realistic option for this.
- space to grow food, and keep some animals. Since the ideal of this house is to be entirely self sufficient, there needs to be space to grow the food that I’d need to live. Although I understand that, for the most part, it’s unrealistic to imagine being able to live entirely from things you’ve grown yourself (unless you have a lot of space and a lot of farming expertise), it’s worth a try! I’d like room for a vegetable patch, and space to keep a few chickens – at least!
I imagine this property to have a roof garden, as well as the property’s regular garden. A roof garden with some soft, solar powered lighting, and a few fragrant flowers would be ideal, and a wonderful spot to pull up a chair and star gaze a little during the warmer months.
The inside of the house would be spacious, airy and relatively minimal with regards to furnishings and ornamental additions. I would like the house to be decorated in a neutral, natural palette, and to appeal to the overall aesthetic of the house. The house would be two floors, with an attic for either storage or an extra room.
I’d also like a cat, or two, and a fish pond to seal the deal!
