There are always risks when it comes to buying a new home – the uncertainty as to whether there’s more to the property than meets the eye, the fact that many listings make properties out to be better than they really are – the list is potentially endless. Whether you’re an old hand at buying new homes, or you’re just venturing out into your first foray on the property market, it’s important that you know what you’re getting yourself into ahead of time. Today, we’re talking about the questions you need to ask before you commit to buying that property!

Questions to Ask Before Committing to Buy

Have I checked all the details?

Whether that’s the fine print, or the little nooks and crannies of the property. It’s important to check all the details and make sure you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into. With the majority of properties being sold on the basis of caveat emptor or “buyer beware”, it’s more important than ever to ensure that you’re checking the details of the properties you’re putting your money into.

How much work do I need to do on the property?

Unless they’re new builds or recently refurbished, the majority of properties will need some sort of work doing on them – something it’s important to ask yourself is how much work actually needs doing on the property? Make sure, as we just mentioned, you’re checking all the finer details, to ensure you’re not missing anything.

How much work am I prepared to do on the property?

Just as you need to ask yourself how much work needs doing, it’s equally important to be realistic with how much work you’re going to be prepared to do on a property to bring it up to a standard that you’re happy with. Just because a property has a relatively low sale price, doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Which brings us to our next point…

Is this a good investment?

A house is likely to be one of the most important and expensive things you’ll ever buy in your lifetime, and undoubtedly, it is an investment. If you’re buying the property to live in for the foreseeable future, this might not be as important to you, but if you’re a property developer or know you’ll be moving in the near future, considering how well the property will do as a resale is important. Property prices are constantly fluctuating so it’s impossible to tell for certain, but consideration is needed.

Can I see myself living here long term?

Can you really see this property becoming your family home? Somewhere all your relatives show up for Christmas and enjoy spending time? If not, maybe it’s not for you and it’s time to start looking elsewhere!
