Online Real Estate: For Better or Worse

As the world progresses and technology improves, more and more things are moving towards a digital format. Reading can now be done via an electronic book from your e-reader, or even your mobile phone; music is now almost entirely digital, and streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime TV and even YouTube have all buy taken over traditional televisions and our DVD collections have been banished to the loft... but what about Real Estate? Well, it's happened with Real Estate, too! Online Real Estate has been a thing for a couple of years now, and it's only becoming more and more prevalent in recent years - it's here to stay, for better or worse.

Online Real Estate: For Better or Worse

Online Real Estate companies get their business on the basis that they’re cheaper than traditional Real Estate Agents; but does this necessarily mean their customers are better off? Of course, online Real Estate “Agents” can do some of the things that your traditional Real Estate Agent can do; some of the online based marketing, listing your property and ensuring that it’s advertised where it should be, but unfortunately in other areas they do fall short.

Some of the benefits that customers see with traditional Real Estate Agents include:

  • local knowledge, with local connections that you can take advantage of if you’re unfamiliar with an area
  • help with valuation, taking photographs, and finding other industry professionals to take care of things such as surveys
  • personal support, often with a tailored service to your needs. For example, if you need someone to assist with viewings and the like, they can often help with that
  • local marketing, local advertisements and the connections with other local Agents to help get your property sold

While your traditional Real Estate Agent may cost more, often this fee is taken from your property’s final sale price, and you usually won’t need to pay as high a price – if at all – for a purchase property. Many people believe that a traditional service is worth the extra money that you’re paying because you’re receiving a more comprehensive service with more personal interaction. Additionally, Real Estate is still viewed quite traditionally by many, and the idea of an online, digital based service can be incredibly off-putting.

What do you prefer, a traditional Real Estate Agent, or their online based equivalent?
