Nest & Others: The Future of Home

The inside of our homes is changing. No longer is technology restricted to our desks and inside our bags; now it’s everywhere. Our household items are communicating not only with us and each other, but a network, too. The future of the home has arrived, and it’s something you’ll want to sit up and pay attention to.

The inside of our homes is changing. No longer is technology restricted to our desks and inside our bags; now it’s everywhere. Our household items are communicating not only with us and each other, but a network, too. The future of the home has arrived, and it’s something you’ll want to sit up and pay attention to.

The Future of Home

There are various pieces of technology, both being developed and those that are currently available, that are specifically for the home. For the most part, they’re developed to help us be more conscious of the amount of energy and water that we’re using, and to make our lives that little bit easier day to day.

Apple’s HomeKit is an example of software being developed to integrate various systems and hardware to make your home more cohesive; although HomeKit primarily works with Apple products, Apple have formed partnerships with companies such as Honeywell and Phillips to integrate the technology into their products.

Beyond Apple, there is the Nest App 5.0, which works on Android devices. It seems to be a similar concept to the HomeKit; in that it links various pieces of technology together to make a cohesive technological experience within your home run smoothly. Want to lock the door? Install the Lockitron Bolt, and you can! Thermostats, lighting, door locks, and even your cooker; very little is off limits, and the aim of all of it is ease of life for you.

While all of these things are very tempting and you might feel like running out and purchasing whatever you can to improve your home, be sure to double check that the hardware you purchase is compatible with the Nest software if you’re using that, or the HomeKit software if you’re making use of that.

For tech lovers, the advancements that are being made in technology for the home are incredibly exciting. Not only will it make things easier to do for the regular person, think of the benefits for elderly people, and those who are less able to do things for themselves. These advancements could bring with them an unprecedented level of independence for people that are usually dependent on others doing things for them. This can only be a good thing.
