Local Knowledge and Information

Before you make the decision to move properly, you'll probably find yourself doing copious amounts of research to find out more about the properties you like, the area you'd like to live in, local amenities and so on. This is definitely a great thing. As far as we're concerned, there's no better way to ensure you're moving somewhere you'll absolutely love than by doing plenty of research and gathering as much local knowledge and information as possible, and that's before you approach a Real Estate Agent to take advantage of theirs. With this in mind, today we're going to be talking about where you can find reliable local knowledge and information to help you make a more informed choice about your house move.

With this in mind, today we’re going to be talking about where you can find reliable local knowledge and information to help you make a more informed choice about your house move.

Where to find great local knowledge and information

The Internet

This is a bit of a given, but the Internet is really your best friend when it comes to research. You can find out all sorts, from public opinion, the political background of the area you’re thinking of moving to, how close your local primary school and train stations are, and whether you’re connected to a good bus route – all from a quick Google search! The Internet can also arm you with knowledge of the local property market, including general house prices and other brilliant information that might come in useful.

The Local Community

An under-utilised tool when it comes to research is the local community. No one knows more about their home town than local residents, so get involved! Post in Facebook groups, go down to the library and chat to people in there, actively ask people for their opinions if you see someone who you think you could talk to… you’ll generally find that people love nothing more than a good gossip, and you can learn so much.

Friends and family

This is where you’ll want to be aware of pre-existing prejudices – but your family and friends may even be able to help you! If you’ve got a family member or a friend who lives in, or close to, the area you’re thinking of moving to, be sure to ask them about what they think and whether they think it’ll be good for you. As we’ve just mentioned, be aware that they might have a personal reason for not liking the place, but it’s always good to get a personal insight.

Newspapers

Local newspapers will report on anything from local crimes, new store openings and public activities to small business advertisements and so on. This is why you can’t go wrong with reading through a local newspaper and seeing what’s going on. It’ll give you a good idea of the sort of community the area has to offer, and you’ll also get a good idea of how it compares to where you currently live.
