Knowing a House is Right for You

Finding a new home is a really big deal - especially if you're purchasing as that is a long term commitment. Many people make the mistake of viewing a house for five or ten minutes once or twice, and then making the decision to put an offer in and snap it up, only to regret it later on when they've moved in and discovered the house really isn't quite right for them. But how can you avoid this? Is there any way to really know that a house is perfect for you, and something that you can make into a home for you and your family? Maybe not, but here are some things to consider to help you decide.

Finding a new home is a really big deal – especially if you’re purchasing as that is a long term commitment. Many people make the mistake of viewing a house for five or ten minutes once or twice, and then making the decision to put an offer in and snap it up, only to regret it later on when they’ve moved in and discovered the house really isn’t quite right for them. But how can you avoid this? Is there any way to really know that a house is perfect for you, and something that you can make into a home for you and your family? Maybe not, but here are some things to consider to help you decide.

Knowing a House is Right for Your Home: How To

Size

The size of a property is often a big deciding factor in many people’s choices to buy, or rent, a home – and rightly so. Consider, though, whether you really need a property the size that you’re considering, or whether you could opt for one that’s a little more cosy? Or perhaps you need more space than you were considering. Perhaps you’re thinking of having children in the future? Be sure you’ve chosen a property with enough room and bedrooms to acccomodate your growing family, or future pursuits.

Facilities

The number of bathrooms, whether there’s room for a dishwasher in the kitchen, whether there’s a shed in the garden (or maybe a swimming pool?) can all be things to consider when you’re deciding whether to purchase or rent a particular property. Take a good look at the facilities of the property before deciding for certain whether you want it.

Local Amenities

This will generally come down to the location of the property, which should be something you thought about before even taking the opportunity to go and view it – but considering the local amenities, such as schools, shops, train stations and the like is important. Take the chance to look at what’s around your potential new home before deciding 100%.

Potential for Expansion

If you choose a home with enough space for you at present, but maybe not enough if your family grows then it’s worth seeing if you’ll be allowed to apply for planning permission to expand your new home in the future. For some people, this is a deal breaker – be sure to look into it.

Imagine yourself living there

Try and imagine yourself living in the property. Can you see yourself spending each day and night there? Can you see yourself bringing up your family there, and leaving the house each day for school runs and to go to work? If so, great! If not, then maybe the property isn’t quite right for you.

Really inspect, and think about it

Finally, really take the time to inspect the property. Bring other people with you when you go to view it, visit the property a few times at different times of the day to get a feel for the neighbourhood (clear this with the current owners/Real Estate Agents first, of course), and go back more than once to get a better feel for it. Once you’ve done this, spend some time thinking about whether it’s what you want – particularly if you’re looking to purchase.
