When you’re looking for a new home rental, wading through the sea of listings can quickly become a chore. How wonderful would it be if some fairy god mother could thrust upon you the best way to find a new home rental on the Internet?

Well, we’ve put together some great advice on how to find your new home rental on the Internet, as well as the best places to look!

Where to start?

As always when you’re looking to purchase or rent a new home, we recommend really thinking about what you want from your property and narrowing down the features you’d like to have. Things to think about include:

  • the type of area you would like to live in
  • the type of property
  • the size of the property
  • any particular features you’d like; e.g. en suite bathrooms, a large garden, etc.

Once you’ve narrowed down the style, size and location of the property you would like to rent, and any particular features you would like it to have, you can begin your search!

It’s important to note that you won’t be able to customize rental properties to the same extent you would with a purchase property, so it’s worthwhile taking the time to look for a property that suits your needs; especially if you’re looking for a long term lease.

Find a home

Now to start looking for your home. There are a good few places you can look online, starting with the humble Google search.

Perform a quick search for the type of property you’re looking for in the area you would like to move to, and have a look through the first few results.

After a Google search, the logical places to look are local Real Estate Agent’s websites, and larger home search websites, such as Zillow, Redfin or Homelight. Home search websites will generally have plenty of listings to look through — especially if you’re not too fussed about the type of property you move into, with lots more being added each day.

When you’ve finished narrowing down the property you’re looking for, you can perform a search on each of the websites and then save it. If you sign up to alerts, you’ll be notified whenever a property that fits your requirements becomes available.

Listing style websites, such as Craigslist, will also have properties up for rent. They’re well worth taking a look at if don’t have strict search parameters for your new home, but keep in mind they won’t have as many properties to choose from compared to sites like Homelight.
