Getting Involved in your Community: How, and Why?
Community spirit is something that is arguably dying out, and we think this is a terrible thing! Gone are the days of people going out of their way to help their neighbours, getting involved in local issues and doing their best for the place that they call home. Of course, many people are just going along with this, despite wanting to get more involved in their local communities, purely because they don't know how to go about getting involved. If this sounds like you, and you'd like to know a little more about getting involved with your local community, then you're in the right place - this is what we're talking about today!

Your Community Involvement
Getting involved with your local community is a great way to help you feel like you belong, give you something extra to do that’s fulfilling, and help you make new friends in the process – especially if you’re new to an area! Here are some things you can do to help you get more involved in your community.
Volunteering in a charity shop, a local animal sanctuary, or even with vulnerable people is a wonderful way to get involved in your community. There are so many different opportunities, and volunteering can really help you learn new skills that otherwise you wouldn’t have. Ask around about volunteering opportunities, and see what appeals to you.
There are often fundraisers going on for any number of things, and getting involved with these is a fun and worthwhile way of immersing yourself in your community. Whether it’s the cliche “new Church roof” or something else, fundraising is plenty of fun, and helps you get to know more of your community.
Charity events are often held by local schools, or community centres, and organisers often ask people to get involved and help out where they can. If you have a specific skill-set that you believe would be helpful, or you just want to go and give them a hand, definitely do so!
Getting involved with the local council
If you’re interested in trying to improve the area that you live in, then getting involved with your local council is a good idea. Many local authorities have a citizen section where they listen to concerns and questions from local people, and this is a great way to get your voice heard. If your local authority doesn’t already have something like this, then campaign to make it a thing! Get involved.
If you’re just looking for something new to do, and somewhere to learn new skills and meet new people, then look at joining a hobby group or enrolling in an adult learning class. You can often find these advertised in shop windows, or local libraries, and you can have plenty of fun getting involved, and get to know people from your community!
