So, you’ve bought your new home and you’ve moved in — what do you do now? Most people are so tired by the time they’ve moved into their new home that they just want to give up and go to sleep!

Instead, we recommend doing these 8 things as soon as possible after moving in to keep things running smoothly!

Make sure all your boxes made it

It’s fairly unlikely that any of your boxes are going to go missing during the move, but when you arrive at your new home, just double check all your boxes are there. If anything’s missing, quickly contact the removal company and get your stuff back!

Lightbulbs!

It’s all well and good having enough light during the day on your first day there, but it’ll get dark pretty soon. Make sure one of the first things you do is putting in some lightbulbs so you’ve got enough light to see by when it gets dark.

Unpack the essentials

Unpack the essentials as soon as you can. Most of your stuff can wait a day or so until you’ve had some rest, but unpacking the essentials straight away will make your first night a lot more comfortable — and you’ll be able to get a shower and a nice rest!

Finish off unpacking later on.

Update your address and register your vehicle

Make sure to update your address as soon as possible, and get your vehicle registered at your new address sooner rather than later. This will ensure all your mail reaches you, and you won’t get in trouble for having your car registered in the wrong place.

Get your utilities set up

Getting your utilities set up sooner rather than later will save you trouble later on. Get your water, gas, electric and entertainment bundles set up quick and make your home comfortable!

Get connected in your new neighborhood

Meet and greet your neighbors, join the library, see what’s what at your local community center and so on. The better connected you are in your new community, the quicker you’ll settle in.

Sort your insurance

Both your home and contents insurance will need setting up fairly quickly after you move. Add it to your “to do” list for after you move and get it out of the way before you forget. That way, if anything goes wrong with your home or belongings early on after the move, you won’t have the hassle of realizing your insurance isn’t valid when you need it.

Sort your appliances

If your home didn’t come with appliances and you didn’t take your old ones with you when you moved, then get your appliances sorted out pretty quickly after moving. A fridge, washing machine and cooker will make your move feel like it’s finished up sooner rather than later.
