Finding a home in Tokyo

Tokyo is a bustling city, with a population of over thirteen million people. With this number of people in what is a relatively small space, it’s not hard to see why property is in high demand.

When you’re first moving to the city, the chances are you’ll be looking at renting a property rather than diving straight into a purchase, and that’s what we’ll be talking about today.

There are many Real Estate websites where you can head to make a start on your property search; these will give you the traditional listing format, and can put you in touch with an Agent who may be able to offer insight into particular areas and help you out with some local knowledge. We can also put you directly in contact with a great Real Estate Agent in Tokyo; more on that at the end of the post. Before that, however, it’s important that you do some research of your own.

  • As always, we recommend conducting local area research in person if at all possible. It’s all well and good to think you’d enjoy living somewhere, but unless you’ve experienced the culture and atmosphere for yourself, it’s impossible to tell for certain! So, hit the streets of Tokyo, get out there and see what the city has to offer, you’ll be all the better for it!
  • Make sure you have all your property prepared well in advance so you don’t lose out on a seemingly perfect property on a technicality, it can, and will happen.
  • You will be asked for a guarantor when looking for a property to rent. The catch is that your guarantor must be both Japanese and living in Japan. This can be difficult if you’re new to the country and don’t know anyone living there, but there are guarantor companies around to help if you need it. Try to secure a guarantor ahead of time to prevent unnecessary complications.
  • You’ll notice that many rental properties incur a huge amount of fees, and if you don’t have the money, you won’t get the property. Ensure you either have the savings or someone to back you when looking for property.
  • When in Japan, you’ll get by much easier if you already know the language, especially when it comes to looking for property. Learn as much as you can before you move, and you’ll find the transition a lot easier.
