Find a home in Paris

As always, take care of your preparatory steps before making the decision to move anywhere. These include:

  • preparing your paperwork
  • ensuring your finances are in order; for example, have you got a good credit rating? Can you afford the potentially high rent? And do you have the money set aside for a security deposit, the first month’s rent and your first month’s bills until you get settled?
  • doing your local research and choosing a specific area to live in
  • deciding your “must haves” and what you’re willing to compromise on – this is important when you’re looking for accommodation in a city
  • specific to France: make sure that you have someone living in France, in good financial standing, willing to act as your guarantor.

Once you’ve got those taken care of, ensure that:

You know your rights
By law, French landlords aren’t allowed to let a property with less than 9 metres squared of living space, yet many still try to do so. If you come across this, don’t take the property and be sure to report them, as this is a violation.

You consider living just outside the city
Paris and the surrounding areas have excellent transport links, and you can ride a bicycle if you want to. For these reasons, it’s worthwhile considering living just outside the city if you don’t mind a bit of travelling; it could save you money, and give you the opportunity for a better living space

You’re quick!
Property in Paris is in high demand, and if you blink you’ll miss it. Be sure to check out boards in cafes and local shops for property advertisements, as well as looking online and taking the advice of a local Real Estate Agent (try Lodgis for both short term and long term lets) and ensuring that you have everything in order before enquiring about a property. With so many people after them, if you’re not ready, unfortunately you’ll probably be passed over.
