The “Rule of Three” in Minimalist Homes

In last week’s blog post about starting a minimalist home, we shared one simple step that could reap big benefits for you. We’ll follow up that tip with another one that will help you push the envelope even further. This is an even more radical way to start a minimalist home, so we recommend you begin practicing last week’s tip first. But if you are up to the challenge, we’re not stopping you from jumping into this one…

“Rule of Three”

The “Rule of Three” is another way to combat materialism and hoarding. While the “One In, Two Out” method is a great way to gradually declutter your home, this new method is an even more radical approach that brings you results as soon as you implement it. So what is this rule all about?

This method is about strictly limiting your possessions to just three of each kind. This is especially true for your wardrobe because it is the single collection that has the most duplication or triplication of almost everything. Let’s take a concrete example…

This rule “forces” you to limit your dress clothes to three. The same goes for your casual wear, your pants, jackets and coats, shoes, bags, scarves, pants, shorts, skirts, and others. The same goes for kitchen things, children’s toys, books, home linen, beddings, etc. etc. etc. You only keep the things you love the most and use frequently. Then, you will enjoy a minimalist wardrobe.

The philosophy behind is that you don’t necessarily need a hundred clothes to survive each day. Think about it. Surely, there are things you’ve not worn in ages! You don’t have to take it literally. Perhaps you can keep four or five of each, for as long as they are the absolute essentials. The point is, we often have too much stuff than we need.

Small Steps, Big Benefits

Like last week’s tip, the obvious direct benefit would be having a home that is free from cluttered. Your rooms, kitchen, wardrobe, cabinets, drawers and shelves will be more spacious, neat, and clean. You will begin to feel that your home is suddenly more inviting and relaxing.

If you practice implement the “Rule of Three” and maintain it with the “One In, Two Out” rule, meaning not starting to accumulate things again, the indirect benefit would be seeing your expenditures go down. With fewer things, you begin to spend less too.

You start being conscious of buying new stuff because you know you will start losing the benefit of having a more liberating home, free from the choking feeling that too much materialism could bring. Hence, you start saving money because you start to be content with what you have—the ones you enjoy wearing or using best.

Of course, for all the things that get cut out from your list of three things, you can earn money from them by hosting a garage sale. Or try auctioning them off on eBay. Old books that are actually great titles sell very well on Amazon too. People are earning tens of thousands of dollars selling collectibles and old stuff online. So why not do the same?

So there you go! Those are really awesome benefits from a simple step that you can implement today. You don’t have to be a minimalist to start enjoying the benefits minimalism can bring. Take it slow and see where it goes. One small win at a time can give you a lifetime of benefits. Enjoy!
