Have a Bigger House Without Breaking the Bank

When new families are just starting out, they are quite contented in owning a small and cozy home. Of course! For them, that’s far better than renting out a flat. But as years go by and the families grow larger with the addition of kids in the home, many families wish they could own bigger houses. Suddenly, their first home looks and feels overcrowded with too many toys and things and furniture!

Good news! You don’t have to jump into buying a bigger house at once. Especially if you do not have the money to fund that yet. Here are some very affordable—and even free—ways to make your house look bigger without breaking the bank.

  1. Declutter

It’s hard to move around and have your peace of mind if there’s just way too much stuff lying around the house. You’ve got to declutter! No one needs a million stuff. Only the bare necessities. We just want the extra things because oftentimes marketing companies do their jobs extremely well. But if you are serious about having a more spacious home, remove unnecessary stuff. Sell them off on eBay or at garage sales. Maybe one day you can really buy a much bigger and comfortable home for your family.

  1. Use natural light

Make your home seem bigger and brighter by tapping mother nature’s power—sunlight! The darker the room, the smaller it looks. Inversely, the brighter the room, the bigger and more spacious it looks. So open your windows and remove things that block natural light from entering your home. You move some furniture around to clear corridors and make wind and light flow freely from room to room. Maybe you can also add some wall mirrors. Mirrors are great in bouncing off natural light and color to make spaces look even brighter. It also creates an illusion of larger rooms and longer corridors. This small investment may make a huge difference.

  1. Use light colors

We’ve already mentioned that lighter colors make space look larger. So why not use curtains other linen that are of lighter hues? We know you love your bold color curtains rugs and whatnot. But if you want your home to look more open and spacious, you’ve got to make some little compromises. If you still can afford it, or a fresh paint is long overdue and you’ve saved enough for it, repaint your walls, ceiling, and flooring with light colors and lighter shades of your existing color.

So those are the affordable and free ways of “expanding your room.” No need to build additional rooms or buy a new house. Just follow those three simple ways and see the difference. You’ve got to experience it to appreciate it. Good luck!
