Themed Decor: Tacky or Tasteful?

When we move into a new house, one of the first things we need to do is figure out how to make it a home, and one of the main ways we do this is by putting our own decor into it and making it fit what we love! Whether you choose a colour scheme and build your home's decoration around it, or you go full on with a theme, it's all about making your new property something that you love.

When we move into a new house, one of the first things we need to do is figure out how to make it a home, and one of the main ways we do this is by putting our own decor into it and making it fit what we love! Whether you choose a colour scheme and build your home’s decoration around it, or you go full on with a theme, it’s all about making your new property something that you love.

Today, we’re talking about themed decor. Is themed decor tacky, or is it tasteful? Are all themed created equally, or are some a little less tacky than others? Let’s dive in and explore!

Themed Decor: Tacky or Tasteful?

Let’s talk themes.

Maybe you love a particular historical era, or a wonderful TV show, or even a music artist and you want to build your home’s decoration around that? There are so many different options for the themes you could choose, and they can absolutely go with whatever you love!

So, is themed decor tacky, or is it tasteful?

To be honest, it largely depends on the execution. A skilled execution and high quality materials can make all the difference between your decor turning out incredibly tasteful, or ending up a little bit tacky. Of course, what’s considered tacky is entirely subjective, so that’s going to have a lot to do with it, too!

Here’s how you can make your themed interior decor be a little more tasteful, and a little less tacky:

  • Don’t try to cram too much in: Once you’ve chosen a theme, make that central to your decor choice and don’t try to cram too much in to one space. That will only lead to the feeling of tackiness being overwhelming and probably won’t be too tasteful!
  • Use quality materials when possible: Sometimes, using cheaper materials can lead to things not looking quite as good as they should do, but if you use quality materials you can avoid that as much as possible and enjoy your theme looking and feeling the best it possibly can!
  • Try one over-arching theme for your whole home: Rather than breaking your themes up across the rooms of your home, try for one theme for everything to keep it all flowing nicely and not feeling disjointed.

Of course, this is all a little tongue in cheek! If you love the way your home is decorated, it doesn’t matter if another person thinks it’s a little tacky. Enjoy yourself.
